Liqui-Cel Membrane Contactors

Liqui-Cel® Membrane Contactors are used for degassing liquids around the world. They are widely used for O2 removal from water as well as CO2 removal from water. They have displaced the vacuum tower, forced draft deaerator, and oxygen scavengers around the world for over 20 years.

Liqui-Cel®, SuperPhobic®, MiniModule® and MicroModule® Membrane Contactors are used extensively for deaeration of liquids in the microelectronics, pharmaceutical, power, food & beverage, industrial, photographic, ink and analytical markets

Typical Liqui-Cel Membrane Contactor Applications:

  • Deoxygenation

Liqui-Cel® Membrane Contactors are used around the world for deoxygenation of water and other liquids. Oxygen (O2) negatively impacts many processes; it is corrosive and can oxidize materials. In the power and industrial areas, piping, boilers and equipment are susceptible to corrosion if deaeration is not present. Liqui-Cel® Contactors offer easy-to-operate, modular solutions for degassing and oxygen (O2) removal from water without chemicals and without large vacuum towers or deaerators. Liqui-Cel® Contactors also offer the benefit of simultaneous oxygen and carbon dioxide removal from water as well as N2 control with one step.

  • Decarbonation

For years, many industries have used Liqui-Cel® Contactors for carbon dioxide removal from water. Systems utilizing RO and EDI or CDI technologies need to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the water. High inlet conductivity levels into an EDI or CDI device will reduce the resistivity of the outlet water

  • Carbonation

    A controlled method using membranes.
Membrane Contactors offer a compact and efficient means to carbonate a beverage or liquid. The addition of carbon dioxide gas to a beverage is what gives it its sparkle and a tangy taste. Adding Carbon Dioxide can also prevent spoilage and reduce bacteria in liquids.
Rather than sparging large CO2 gas bubbles into a liquid, Membrane Contactors diffuse the CO2 into the liquid on a microscopic level. This produces a much more controlled level of carbonation in the end product. The process of dissolving CO2 into the liquid is much more controlled and less CO2 gas is required to get to the same level of carbonation as sparging systems that are very wasteful. This reduces operating costs to the end user while producing a superior end product.

  • Nitrogenation

Some processes are improved with the introduction of nitrogen into the water or fluid. Ultrasonic and megasonic cleaning, for example, is improved if the oxygen is removed but some nitrogen is added to the water. Liqui-Cel® Membrane Contactors offer the perfect solution as they can deoxygenate and complete a controlled nitrogenation step at the same time.
The food & beverage industry also adds nitrogen to liquids in various processes. Nitrogenation is typically a step used in beverage processing if more bubbles or a thicker ‘head’ or foam layer on top of the beer is desired. Membrane Contactors offer an easy in-line step where nitrogen can be added in a controlled diffusion process that produces a more stable end product

  • Hydrogenation

  • Debubbling

Bubbles can cause process problems in many analytical systems and process water systems if not removed. MiniModules®, MicroModulesTM, and Liqui-Cel® Membrane Contactors offer a compact in-line means to remove bubbles from many liquids
Membrane Contactors are available in several sizes to meet the needs of many industries. MiniModules® and MicroModules® are the ideal choice for small scale system debubbling needs.

  • Hydrogen Sulfide Removal

  • VOC Removal

  • Osmotic Distillation

  • Liquid/Liquid Extraction

  • Corrosion Control

It is commonly known that dissolved gases such as CO2 and O2 can oxidize and destroy metal piping and system components. Corrosion control and prevention is essential to avoid the large cost associated with replacing old pipes and corroded equipment. The life time of metal components can be extended and plant downtime can be minimized by adding a small compact membrane degassing system that controls corrosion.

  • Humidification of Gasses

  • Dealcolization

  • Ammonia Removal

Ammonia is a prevalent problem in the wastewater of many industries. Because Ammonia is widely used as a cleaning agent in many processes, it will end up in the plant wastewater and it must be treated or removed from water prior to it being discharged back into the environment. Liqui-Cel® Membrane Contactors offer a great alternative for removing ammonia from wastewater in many industries and our membrane contactors can remove up to 95% or more of the incoming ammonia.
Liqui-Cel Contactors extract ammonia from wastewater and convert it into a harmless ammonium salt which has some commercial value as a fertilizer. All systems will vary based in the process parameters and our technical service engineers will be happy to size a system based on the parameters of your application
